Irritable bowel syndrome is a non gynecological reason for pelvic pain and can be experienced by both men and women. It can cause diarrhea, constipation or both, and it is typically relieved once a bowel movement is had. Stress and diet may make it worse, and a gastrointestinal specialist may be needed to diagnose and treat this condition. Pelvic adhesion are groups of scar tissue that band together, binding organs together. These adhesion can form for many reasons; they can be the result of pelvic surgery, appendicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. While difficult to diagnose at times, they can be felt during a pelvic exam if they bind together the ovaries and uterus. A condition that causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside of the uterus, endometriosis works in time with your menses. The difference is, because the tissues are growing outside of the uterus, when they break down during your cycle, they are unable to exit the body. This causes them to become trapped in your abdomen, resulting in pelvic pain due to cysts and the scarring that form from the condition. Emotional pain and living with chronic stress only exacerbate this issue, often making this a cycle that is difficult to break free from.
